First cultivated in England during the 1750s, the Peppermint is a hybrid between Watermint and Spearmint. But the herb goes way back as far as Greek Mythology, Ancient Egypt, and during the Middle ages for its medicinal properties. Ancient Greek and Romans used the herb to help soothe stomach problems and was used in the 18th century as a folk medicine for nausea, respiratory issues, and menstrual disorders. A word of caution as Peppermint oil, when taken in large doses, can be dangerous to your health.
Care guide
This outdoor plant in the Philippines thrives best under direct sunlight. While it can also survive in partial shade, it’s best to let them be exposed in full sun where it can enjoy optimum growth and increase its potency for its oils and other medicinal properties. Watering is normally done once every day, however, it can be watered two to three times a day on a hot weather. This herb likes its soil moist, and won’t tolerate dry conditions. Make sure that the water drains at the bottom of the pot when watering as well.
Propagation
When propagating this outdoor plant in Manila, you can cut at least 8 cm of a top stem under a node. Remove any of the lower leaves on the stem if necessary. Afterwards, place the stem cutting/s in water and don’t forget to change the water once a week or when needed. Once it has developed a root system over a couple of weeks, the Peppermint can now be potted into soil.
