Description

Cactus is one of the ideal low-maintenance tabletop plants for any area of your home. Cacti can go without water for long periods because they store a lot of water once they receive it. Cactus can be easily distinguished from other succulent plants by its trichomes (plant hairs), spines, or glochids (barbed bristles) and its unique shape and flowers.

It is also perfect to be matched with our Good pots collection.

History

Cactus derives its name from the Greek word ‘Kaktos, which means ‘spiky plant’ that belongs to the family of Cactaceae. Cacti could be found natively across the Americas and typically found in drought-prone areas. Consequently, Mexico has by far the most species and the widest variety. Cacti or cactuses are perfectly suited to live in the extreme heat and environment of the desert, but surprisingly these plants can not be found in Africa. Due to the scorching hot climate in the desert, all the moisture from the plants will dry out and without the shade from the spines, they wouldn’t be able to survive.

Care guide

This succulent for sale in Manila thrives best in bright indirect sunlight. So they should sit well in areas near a window or outdoors in a shaded area. They also like their soil well-draining and to be dried out in between waterings. Suggested watering schedule is every 7-10 days or when the soil is already dry. Make sure that the excess water drains at the bottom of the pot. Remember that succulents are accustomed to dry arid conditions so under-watering them is slightly better than overwatering.

Propagation

Propagating a cactus can be easily done through Plantlet removal as they produce offsets below them. Make sure to use gloves or thongs when propagating a cactus as they’re spiky. Gently remove the offset from its parent plant and let them dry. Pot them into a new pot and place them in a bright shaded area. Mist the soil every few days or when the soil is dry. The same procedure can be done through cuttings as well.
