The Sweet Basil  is an aromatic herb, popular for its taste and used widely for cooking. It is commonly used to make pesto and adds flavor to dishes like pasta and pizza.

History & Health Benefits

Ocimum basilicum is the botanical name for Basils which is native to Asia. Being cultivated for over 5,000 years, the herb has pretty much reached different areas of the globe. It was found that Basils were used for embalming and preserving mummies in ancient Egypt as they were discovered inside tombs. It was also believed to serve as protection in different cultures from India and Crete.

They’re rich in antioxidants and have anti-inflamatory properties, while its essential oils have many benefits as well. Care guide

This herb for sale in Manila thrives best in hot climates. They should be placed outdoors where it has access to direct sunlight at least 6 to 8 hours a day. They also like a well-draining potting mix and moist soil most of the time. It’s easy to spot a thirsty basil as its leaves will droop at once. Watering should be done daily at least once, but twice to thrice a day on a hot weather. They can be ready for harvest once they’re around 6 to 8 inches tall!

Propagation

Snip around a 4 inch-long stem right below a node, make sure this stem has not yet flowered. Take out the leaves at the bottom 2 inches and place them in a glass of water. Make sure that they’re positioned somewhere with bright sunlight, and don’t forget to change the water weekly or when needed. Wait for around 2 weeks to a month, or until its roots grow to at least about 2 inches long. Afterwards, pot them as you would with any Basil plant and make sure they get direct sunlight!
